FELINE Modern Languages

FELINE Modern Languages front navigationThis project grew out of a pre-Melchior innovation, beginning in 1987. (FELINE was the UK's first online resource for the Further Education curriculum, a project run by Martin Brasier.)

The concept was simple enough: to make use of the foreign language satellite TV channels which were then becoming available, and exploit in particular news and current affairs material to support matching curriculum themes.

This was done by providing downloadable worksheets and guidance for teachers to use with their classes. Originally grant-funded, Melchior took over the project in 1991, operating and managing it as a subscription service when funding support ceased.

The service delivered weekly materials, every term-time week, with absolute reliability, until the team retired and the service closed in 2008. It may well be that it is still the longest running educational online service providing such regular updates.
